When I look back on my life just 16 years ago, wow what a change has taken place! I was dating a beautiful woman from Zimbabwe, Africa named Sharon Tichareva, about to be married to her in Westlake, Ohio.
We did not know what the future held for us. I was on the full-time staff of a large church in Ohio having the time of my life!
But God was getting ready to rock my world!
God had plans for us that we did not know at the time (big big plans). After we were married as we began to pray together, God dealt with our hearts to trust him fully with our family size. It began to blow our minds because everyone we talked to even other Christians we looked up to, would talk to us about the importance planning your family (that means limiting your family size). Then I heard the testimony of Jim Bob & Michelle Duggard who have 19 children, one of the largest families in America. They are an inspirational family!
Their full testimony is great and it’s worth checking out in your spare time, but the part that really stuck with me was about their dealings with children. They prayed that God would give them a love for children like He loves children. What a very powerful prayer!!! I challenge you to pray that prayer if you are a young married couple.
I began to research the concept in the Bible. All I saw from the Word of God was not just adding, but multiplying our family, was 100% God’s will. Here are a few of those scriptures;
3 Children are a gift from the Lord;
they are a reward from him.
4 Children born to a young man
are like arrows in a warrior’s hands.
5 How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them!
He will not be put to shame when he confronts his accusers at the city gates. Psalms 127:3 – 5 (NLT)
28 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” Genesis 1:28 (NLT)
11 “The Lord will give you prosperity in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you, blessing you with many children, numerous livestock, and abundant crops. Deuteronomy 28:11 (NLT)
60 They gave her this blessing as she parted:
“Our sister, may you become
the mother of many millions!
May your descendants be strong
and conquer the cities of their enemies.” Genesis 24:60 (NLT)
Dosen’t sound like much secular family planning with these scriptures does it?
You say those are all Old Testament scriptures what does it say in the New Testament? Glad you asked,
14 So I advise these younger widows to marry again, have children, and take care of their own homes. Then the enemy will not be able to say anything against them. I Timothy 5:14 (NLT)
We could show you more scriptures but for time sake we will stop there. Folks there is no where in the Bible, and I have read it from cover to cover, where God tells young married couples not to have children or to limit their family size. So Sharon and I began to see through the Bible, that God loves multiplication not subtraction. That’s His nature, not just with children but in everything! What greater calling, to invest not in material possesions that fade away, get old and rust with time but in human beings that will live forever.
I am not saying it’s easy, but anything that’s of great value is never easy. The joys of being together far outweigh the difficult times. Plus there is never a dull moment in our home, trust me on that!
